Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you on the Life Below Canal calendar. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...
-Thursday 8/16 through Saturday 8/18 - Battery Dance Festival (FREE) - Enjoy free live performances throughout downtown, as well as free workshops.
-Thursday 8/16 - Throwback Thursday Sumer Film Series (FREE) - Favorite films of the ’80s and ’90s will be screened outdoors on Fosun Plaza every Thursday evening through August 23. Guests will enjoy free popcorn at every film, and comfy, cozy front-row beanbag chairs will be available on a first come, first served basis.
-Thursday 8/16 - Seaport Fit (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - Beginning tonight, Seaport Square at Pier 17 will host FREE fitness classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays curated and led by some of New York’s top fitness experts. Classes include boot camp, circuit training, yoga, and more. Classes are free but space is limited so be sure to RSVP to secure your spot.
-Thursday 8/16 - Film Nights Unwind (FREE) - Unwind with films from Animation Nights New York!
-Friday 8/17 - Sunset Jam on the Hudson (FREE) - Rhythm and grooves fill the air at this Friday evening program. Follow the lead of professional drummers as they guide you through the pulsating beats of traditional African drumming techniques and methods.
-Friday 8/17 - South Street Seaport Museum Free Fridays (FREE) - The Museum launches Free Fridays today, with free admission to theMuseum every Friday till September 21 from 3-7PM.
-Saturday 8/18 - NYC Math Festival (FREE) - The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath)presents the second annual New York City Math Festival...a full day of mathematical fun. Bring the entire family to Fosun Plaza at 28 Liberty and enjoy hands-on math exhibits, entertaining mathematical games, and intriguing puzzles and brainteasers. See exciting performances and take part in constructing a giant geometric sculpture.
-Saturday 8/18 - Brookfield Place Fitness Series (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - Join for a free fitness class at the Waterfront Terrace! Advanced registration guarantees a spot. Walk-ins are encouraged and accommodated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
-Sunday 8/19 - Lazy Sundays (FREE) - End your week on a high note with water views, cold drinks and summer beats courtesy of Brookfield Place's DJs.
-Sunday 8/19 - Fulton Stall Market Outdoor Farmer's Market (FREE) - This year the Sunday market will include guest chefs from Seaport District and Lower Manhattan restaurants offering tastes of their menus and featuring local and seasonal ingredients sourced from the market’s farmers.
-Sunday 8/19 – Big City Fishing (FREE) – Enjoy free family fishing events on Pier 25 every Sunday through 9/30 in Tribeca.
-Monday 8/20 - Hudson Riverkids (FREE) - Check out this weekly kid-focused concert series on Pier 25.
-Monday 8/20 – Big City Fishing (FREE) – Today is the last day to enjoy free family fishing events on Pier 25.
-Monday 8/20 - Ping Pong (FREE) - Every Monday through July enjoy outdoor table tennis to suit any style to the Waterfront!
-Tuesday 8/21 - Trivia Tuesdays (FREE) - Join for the popular Trivia Tuesdays outdoors on the Waterfront! It's a perfect evening with your friends and colleagues with prizes and more.

-Wednesday 8/22 & Thursday 8/23 - The US Open Experience (FREE) - The US Open Experience at Brookfield Place brings the excitement of the Open from Queens to Manhattan! The two days of FREE tennis activities will feature, a full-size tennis court, big screens, and photo opportunities with the US Open trophies and other special activities. Former and current players including US Open Champions 2017 Rafael Nadal and Sloane Stephens will visit the Experience over the course of the two days. Don’t miss Heineken Happy Hour each night with free musical performances and an atmosphere that recreates all of the excitement of the US Open!
-Wednesday 8/22 – Healthy On The Hudson (FREE RSVP NEEDED) – Join every Wednesday for a free fitness class on Pier 25 until 9/12.
-Wednesday 8/22 Pier 17 Cinema Club (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - The Rooftop at Pier 17 will host a series of movie screenings starting tonight. Enjoy movie-themed snacks, themed giveaways and amazing views. Doors open at 6:30pm so bring your blankets and get there early to grab a seat. Tickets are free but capacity is limited so RSVP now.
-Thursday 8/23 - Strings-On-Hudson: Leadlights (FREE) - Rising young stars on the New York string music scene, Leadlights is dedicated to bringing contemporary and classical music to new audiences. The program will include a 2017 piece by New York-based composer Kyle Werner as well as selections by Beethoven, Brahms and Mendelssohn.

-Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.
-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
