Some of New York's most unique (and quirky!) businesses live below Canal Street. Case in point: Tribeca's Mysterious Bookshop, a bookshop that specializes in Mystery Fiction and all its subgenres, including Detective, Crime, Hardboiled, Thrillers, Espionage, and Suspense. Have we piqued your curiosity yet?

We spoke with Mike Durell of Mysterious Bookshop to learn more about this Tribeca institution, and what is coming up for the bookshop in 2018..

Tell us about Mysterious Bookshop...

Mr. Otto Penzler founded the shop in 1979 in a space on 56th Street, near Carnegie Hall. It was the first shop of its kind in America in that it was strictly devoted to crime fiction, i.e. detective stories, cops & robbers, espionage and spies, rare and vintage books, etc. In 2005 we moved to our current location in Tribeca and are still the go-to source for mystery fiction and true crime books.

What is unique about Mysterious Bookshop?

We are the oldest shop specializing in crime fiction in the country, and the only one in New York City.

How has the evolution of the neighborhood impacted Mysterious Bookshop over the years?

Wherever we are located, we value our loyal customers very much; in this neighborhood we might get more visitors to the city due to the proximity of several landmarks like the WTC, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. As more people move into Tribeca, we hope to increase our customer base by welcoming both new and longterm residents!

What's the best part of running a business below Canal Street?

Our wonderful customers!  Also the ease of travel with the proximity of public transport, the various landmarks and bistros to recommend,  and the general liveliness and energy of the area.

What does Mysterious Bookshop have coming up in 2018?

Many author events, lots of exciting new releases from new and established authors, and as always, spreading the word about mystery fiction to readers of long standing and of recent vintage. Check out upcoming events here. We usually have at least a hundred per year spread out the year round.

What are your favorite local spots?
