WEEK AHEAD: Everything Going On Below Canal Street (11.22.17)
Welcome to a special Thanksgiving weekend edition (aka family/houseguest friendly) of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you on the Life Below Canal calendar.
Here are a few of our favorites coming up over the weekend:
-Friday 11/24 - America’s Root Running Tour (SPOT REQUIRED) - Explore the roots of America through events that occurred in New York City from the time the city was an early Dutch Settlement, through British Rule, Revolution and the birth of a new Nation. Some stops include the Wall Street, Fraunces Tavern, City Hall, Rhinelander Sugar House, the African Burial Ground, Trinity Church and more.
-Saturday 11/25 - Saturday Morning Show (FREE) - Everyone's favorite kids show at Hudson Eats is 10AM to 12PM every Saturday.
-Saturday 11/25 & Sunday 11/26 - Evacuation Day Walking Tour (TICKETS REQUIRED) - New York City was occupied by the British for over seven years during the Revolutionary War. On November 25, 1783, the British filed onto their ships to leave for good and the War for Independence was finally over. Follow in the footsteps of General Washington and his troops as they entered New York in triumph, learn about the people and sites of New York, and what it was like to be caught up in a revolution.
-Tuesday 11/28 - Light Up Luminaries (FREE) - Enjoy this free community holiday event to kick off Luminaries, the spectacular light installation and holiday tradition at Brookfield Place. Enjoy fun performances, free ice skating on the waterfront, sweet treats and more!
-Wednesday 11/29 - Santa at Brookfield Place - Santa arrives today at Brookfield Place! Create lasting photo memories with the jolly man in red! Santa’s winter wonderland features a special children’s activity center and is the place for everyone to capture the magic of the holidays.
-Thursday 11/30 - 94th NYSE Tree Lighting (FREE) - This annual event features an entire afternoon of performances worth checking out!
Don’t forget about these ongoing exhibits:
-Luminaries - This holiday tradition in the heart of Lower Manhattan is built on the season’s traditions of sharing, giving, community, and light. Visitors will be immersed in a canopy of light emanating from hundreds of suspended lanterns. Three Wishing Stations on the ground will allow visitors to “send” a wish to the canopy of lanterns above, translating the wish into a mesmerizing display of lights and colors. For every wish sent by the public during the holiday season, Brookfield will donate $1, up to $25,000, to the GRAMMY Museum’s music education programs.
-Volez, Vogyez, Voyagez - Louis Vuitton (FREE but reservations required) - There are both general and guided tours of this spectacular exhibit from October 27th through January 7th. The showcase, which details the French brand’s roots via trunks, steamer bags and other historic paraphernalia, lands at the former American Stock Exchange building for a nine-week run.
