Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...
-NOW through 9.6 - Tepkik - Suspended in the Winter Garden, artist Jordan Bennett’s site-specific installation intersects his Mi’kmaq ancestral and contemporary traditions. In particular, he draws on the Mi’kmaq petroglyph which depicts the Milky Way.
-NOW through 11.8 - Estructuras Monumentales - This is the first major exhibition of outdoor sculptures by the Cuban-born, New York-based artist Carmen Herrera in her seven-decade career. Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales is on view in Lower Manhattan’s City Hall Park.
-Thursday 9.5 - Free Movie Screening - On Thursdays, through October 3, these inspiring athletic stories screen each week at Fosun Plaza (28 Liberty): All screenings begin at 7p. Admission is free. This week: The Legend of Bagger Vance
-Friday 9.6 & 9.7 – Redhawk Native Arts Celebration - This family-friendly event with the Redhawk Native American Arts Council is taking place in conjunction with Tepkik, an installation by artist Jordan Bennett, and will present a variety of activities including art and jewelry-making, Indigenous dance, traditional storytelling with Tchin, and more. The Redhawk Native American Arts Council is a not for profit organization founded and maintained by Native American artists and educators residing in the New York City area.
-Friday 9.6 - Smorgasburg at WTC Oculus - Smorgasburg – the largest outdoor weekly food market in the United States – is officially back! From now until October, try out something new every Friday with 25 different food stalls to choose from. This Friday features live music!
-Friday 9.6 - Live Fashion Illustration For Fashion Week - We will be hosting Fashion Strokes for a two-hour live fashion illustration event. Guests and non-guests are welcome to join us for a complimentary fashion sketch.
-Saturday 9.7 - Parkour On The Plaza - Join a team of parkour coaches from The Movement Creative who will use fun games and obstacles to empower you to find new ways over, under, and through your environment. All levels welcome - ages 7 - 13 recommended. Registration recommended.
-Saturday 9.7 - Movies In The Park! - Join Washington Market Park at 8:30 PM for Crazy Rich Asians.
-Sunday 9.8 – Fulton Stall Market Weekly Outdoor Market – The outdoor marker is open every Sunday 11AM-5PM on Pier 17 until 11.24!
-Sunday 9.8 - Second Sundays - Second Sundays is a free event series that engages Pioneer Works disciplines through live music, food, artists’ open studios, and interactive programs. Governors Island.
-Tuesday 9.10 - Yappy Hour - Come down to the Seaport District for Yappy Hour – the perfect happy hour for humans and dogs alike. Join us on the Heineken Riverdeck every Tuesday from 6pm-8pm with your furry friend to enjoy $5 beers, puppy pools, adorable photo opportunities, and doggie giveaways all while taking in the gorgeous views of the East River and Brooklyn Bridge. Every Tuesday through October 30th.
-Wednesday 9.10 - Seaport Fit - Trooper Fitness Bootcamp is team-oriented conditioning session that involves cardio and strength training methods, where each trooper is responsible for their fellow troopers’ success. It’s the partner accountability and team exercises that make this class an exhilarating challenge. This class will improve overall conditioning, stamina/ endurance, strength, and the best part, mental toughness. This class is built to challenge you in a way that empowers both your mind and body, and helps you reach those 2019 fitness goals.
-Thursday 9.12 - Seaport Fit - Efficient, effective, safe and fun. The Physique 57 method blends cardio, strength training, stretching and recovery to rapidly transform your body. Using your own bodyweight as resistance, this workout targets the muscles in your arms, thighs, seat and abs to the point of fatigue then stretches them for relief. -Auschwitz: Not Long Ago. Not Far Away - Auschwitz: Not Long Ago. Not Far Away., the first traveling exhibit focusing on the concentration camp in Poland is at The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial. The exhibit will feature hundreds of artifacts including a Model 2 freight wagon used for the deportation of Jews, concrete posts that were part of the camp’s fence and survivor testimonies. With anti-Semitism on the rise, the JHE believe the exhibit is a chance to view the horrors of the past as a call to action against hate, bigotry and intolerance. On display till September 1st.
-Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.
-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
