With back-to-school season underway, there’s never been a better time to check out something new for the family (we are talking, kids, adults & everyone inbetween). We spoke with Alanna Chan, Owner/Director of Luna Performing Arts (downtown Manhattan’s newest performing arts school for ALL ages) to learn how you can infuse creativity into your family’s life. Don’t forget to check out their open house, Blast Off Into A Stellar Year with Luna Performing Arts, on September 7th!
Tell us about Luna Performing Arts…
Luna Performing Arts is downtown Manhattan’s newest performing arts school!
Launched in July 2019 by professional actress and dancer Alanna Chan, Luna Performing Arts offers a safe space and outlet for everyone of all ages to pursue their passions for the arts. Our Youth and Adult Program offers an array of dance and movement classes including Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Chinese Dance, Yoga and more!
What inspired you to open Luna Performing Arts downtown?
I was inspired to open Luna Performing Arts downtown because of the diverse and vibrant family friendly neighborhood. It is our mission to offer programs that are reflective of the rich cultural heritages of the neighborhoods and communities.
What makes Luna Performing Arts so unique?
We pride ourselves on four core values: Growth, Creativity, Exploration, and Expression. We want to give children and adults the opportunity to seize that inner creativity we all have inside and to experience real personal growth within themselves. We want to cultivate the mind-body connection in every individual and allow them to freely express themselves in a way that isn’t always apparent in other dance programs.
For example, our youth program is designed to teach more than just dance. We like to think of dance as more a tool that we use to teach valuable life skills such as work ethic, accountability, responsibility, and teamwork. Our renowned Story Time & Movement program is the best example of this as ‘young movers’ are invited to explore the world of performing arts through stories, thematic songs, creative props, and dynamic movement. We offer a unique combination of stories and dance that helps young children develop language, listening skills, gross motor skills, and literacy.
We also offer a variety of adult classes in the evenings including Hip-hop, Contemporary, Yoga, and Dance Fitness. We are constantly scouting the local area for skilled instructors that offer unique classes you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you want to learn the basics of dance, refine a contemporary routine, or are just looking to break a sweat, chances are we have what you’re looking for. Keep an eye on our Instagram for our ‘Wednesdays With’ events where we handpick an instructor every Wednesday to showcase a specialty class.
We are striving to be the most inclusive and accessible performing arts community in downtown NYC. We are more than a place to park your kids for an hour or get in a quick workout; we want it to feel special when you walk through our doors and we aim every day to make that a reality.
What should locals know about Luna Performing Arts?
Luna Performing Arts is for the locals. Our studio space is available during the off hours of classes to rent for special events, rehearsals, and more. Our new studio is clean, bright, and column free. The space features wall mounted barres, bluetooth compatible sound system, Marley overlay, and a dressing room.
What's coming up for Luna Performing Arts this fall?
We’re having an Open House on September 7th, “Blast Off Into A Stellar Year with Luna Performing Arts.” A chance to meet the Luna Performing Arts team, see what our programs are about, and to explore the space. We’ll be dancing, making crafts, and serving popcorn and cotton candy.
What are your go-to spots downtown?
Two Hands NYC - I could go there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Not only is their food delicious but the atmosphere of the restaurant is so calming and comforting, you’ll forget you’re in New York.
Brookfield Place - another spot you’ll forget you’re in New York with their open space and large palm trees. And retail therapy is great too!
