EVENTS: 7th Annual The Happening (May 20th) - Church Street School (5.14.18)
One of the highlights of being a part of the downtown community is seeing how residents come together to support each other and the neighborhood. Celebrating their 7th year, Church Street School for Music and Art's annual block party to benefit their scholarship fund, The Happening, is happening May 20th. Featuring sand art, mini gold, pony rides, a bouncy house, tie-dye art projects, and more, it's bound to be fun for the entire family (so get your tickets now!).
We spoke with Abby Levin, Manager of Development and Outreach for Church Street School for Music and Art, to learn more about the school and how The Happening supports local families and education...
Tell us about Church Street School...
Church Street School for Music and Art is a Tribeca institution that has been in the neighborhood for nearly thirty years. We provide immersive, process-oriented art and music education to students of ALL ages, (16 months-senior citizens). We are passionate about making art education accessible to all and our programs serve a broad range of socially, culturally, & economically diverse communities. We are dedicated to giving expression to all of our student’s natural musical and artistic sensibility through direct, physical participation and hands-on creation, while providing a strong foundation in technique and theory. Check out what makes us unique here.
From early childhood music & movement + visual arts classes, private instrumental lessons, group instrumental classes, a range of visual arts offerings, teen band programs, adult life drawing, monthly open mic nights, free chorus programs for children and adults, community events, and SO much more…CSS is where you come to get in touch with your own creative voice while meeting other great friends in the neighborhood! In addition to that, we do birthday parties, studio rentals and hold performances regularly. There is truly something for everyone here and we are always open to new collaborations and pop up events.
What makes Church Street School so unique?
CSS is the only non-profit school for the arts below Canal Street. We have been around for a good long while here and during that time we have cultivated an incredible faculty of renowned musicians and teaching artists all of whom approach their teaching with a level of care and commitment that is beyond special. People say they come to CSS and feel like they are home and that’s because CSS is about authenticity and meeting students/people exactly where they are at. We don’t judge students or hold them up to an arbitrary standard of performance but rather guide them toward their own true creative voice. This is confidence building and really liberating and finding that freedom within a really safe and loving community of peers and teachers instills a confidence that can be transferred to all other aspects of life. While we are constantly looking to innovate with programming, partnerships and events, the spirit of welcoming and nurturing through the arts always stays the same.
What is so special about The Happening?
The Happening is the best! Who doesn’t love a great block party, right? This is our seventh year holding our unique kind of block party where students have a huge hand in creating the activities. For example, this year’s theme is a beach party and our Creative Arts Club students have designed and are building a mini golf course that’s going to be one of the main attractions. Community involvement and the chance to see some of our incredible students creations and performances are huge highlights. Our faculty and alumni will be a part of the live music performances and we always host incredibly special guests…like the folks at Wildflower Boom and urban farmer Simon Roberts…ever really wonder how plants react to sound? Come and find out! You never know who will drop by and there are so many activities for the whole family to enjoy! Finally and importantly, CSS offers nearly $50,000 in scholarships yearly to those students who have expressed financial need and would like to participate in our programs. The Happening is a fundraiser to build this scholarship fund so the tickets are going to partying for a great cause!
What is new at The Happening this year?
The most incredible new addition to this event is our new home! While we were born on Church Street, (hence the name), we have spent the last 20 years at 74 Warren Street which is where the Happening has always taken place. Earlier this year we moved into the home of the former Flea Theater @ 41 White Street and we are SO excited to party with old and new friends on our brand new block!
What can locals expect at The Happening?
From 12:00-4:00 White street will be closed from Broadway to Church. Attendees will be coming to a beach themed block party and will enjoy: bouncy houses, pony rides, a tie dye booth, sand art, a beach themed mini golf course, sno-cones, cotton candy, sidewalk chalk drawing, face painting, games, raffles and more! There will be food from local restaurants like Saluggi’s, Belle Reve, Baked, Tribeca’s Kitchen, Petrarca, Duane Park Patisserie, as well as beverages for all. That’s only a taste…come on out and enjoy. This party is for everyone and we can’t wait to celebrate in the sunshine! Thanks for the opportunity to chat about our event! Hope to see you there ☺ And a special big shout out to Keller Williams Realty and Goldman Sachs Community Team Works for being two of our wonderful supporting sponsors!
