Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you on the Life Below Canal calendar. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...
-Thursday 5/31 - BPC Golden Jubilee (FREE) - On May 31, 1968, Governor Nelson Rockefeller signed the Battery Park City Authority Act. Bring a picnic dinner and celebrate on the lawns of Rockefeller Park with neighbors and special guests. Enjoy music by Bang on Can’s Asphalt Orchestra and the funky reggae beats of Brown Rice Family.
-Saturday 6/2 - Summer Fitness Series at Brookfield Place (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - Brookfield Place has teamed up with NYC fitness studios to offer complimentary classes on the Waterfront all summer long! Advance registration guarantees a spot. Walk-ins will be accepted if there is room available. Classes are on Saturdays from 11am-12pm. All classes are FREE to attend!
-Sunday 6/3 - Fulton Stall Market Outdoor Farmer's Market (FREE) - This year the Sunday market will include guest chefs from Seaport District and Lower Manhattan restaurants offering tastes of their menus and featuring local and seasonal ingredients sourced from the market’s farmers.
-Sunday 6/3 - Lazy Sundays (FREE)- End your week on a high note with water views, cold drinks and summer beats courtesy of Brookfield Place's DJs all summer long.
-Monday 6/4 - Ping Pong (FREE) - Every Monday June - July, enjoy outdoor table tennis on the Waterfront!
-Monday 6/4 - Hudson Riverkids (FREE) - Hudson River Park brings out all of your favorite New York City family performers each week! From music to magic to interactive storytelling, Hudson RiverKids will keep your family entertained all summer long! These fantastic programs will be offered twice per week at two separate locations in order to give your community a better chance in catching the shows! This year the shows will take place on Mondays at Pier 25 in Tribeca.
-Tuesday 6/5 - Greenmarket at Oculus Plaza (FREE) - After coming back in 2017 to the World Trade Center for the first time on a permanent
basis since 9/11, Greenmarket at Oculus Plaza – the popular GrowNYC farmers market – will be returning to Lower Manhattan for another season beginning on June 5th, 2018. Located at Fulton and Church streets alongside Westfield World Trade Center, the weekly market will
take place every Tuesday (7am-7pm) between June 5th and October 30th and offer fresh, local meat, poultry and seafood; breads and pastries; vegetables; orchard fruits and juices; and dairy products.
-Tuesday 6/5 - Trivia Tuesdays (FREE) - Every Tuesday join for the popular Trivia Tuesdays outdoors on the Waterfront! It's a perfect evening with your friends and colleagues with prizes and more.
-Wednesday 6/6 - Summer Fitness Series at Brookfield Place (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - Brookfield Place has teamed up with NYC fitness studios to offer complimentary classes on the Waterfront all summer long! -Wednesday 6/6 - Healthy On The Hudson (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - Take your workout to our waterfront with Healthy on the Hudson! This FREE exercise series returns to Pier 25 every Wednesday for its 20th Anniversary season, giving you opportunities to get fit all summer long.
Don’t forget about these ongoing exhibits to check out:
-Human Nature - Until June 30th, see six new works by seven contemporary artists inspired by natural landscape and the use of organic forms. Utilizing visual cues from nature, the artworks in this exhibition are distinct interpretations of our environment and the complex relationships to it.
-Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.
-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
