CULTURE: Sea Of Light (12.18.17)
In case you haven’t noticed, South Street Seaport (rebranded as Seaport District NYC) has bounced back post-Sandy in amazing ways. There’s new shopping options, new spots to dine, and they’re not even done with construction! If you haven’t checked it out recently, now’s the time; Sea Of Light, an interactive journey through light and sound, is a sensory-driven adventure for locals of all ages that’s free and around until March.
Done in collaboration with light artist Alexander Green and Symmetry Labs, the same crew who makes the amazing 29Rooms, Sea Of Light takes over the Seaport cobblestones with massive (we’re talking 10-foot-tall) color-changing globe-like structures that react to your movement and clothing color (utilizing 150,000 individually programmed LED bulbs & thermal cameras). The technology, dubbed ‘public ‘Computational Art’, is meant to drive human engagement and community, a perfect fit for the Seaport and Financial District!
Whether you’re a tech nerd, an art geek, or simply want to try something unique, it’s the perfect exhibit to check out during sunset or nighttime (especially on your way to some of our favorite spots, including Clinton Hall, Van Leeuwen, Vbar, and all the other great local restaurants, cafes & bars.
