Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you on the Life Below Canal calendar. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...
-Thursday 1.3 – Luminaries - Now on display till January 4th, this holiday tradition in the heart of Lower Manhattan features a canopy of colorful lights emanating from hundreds of suspended lanterns. This interactive exhibit features three Wishing Stations located on the ground will allow visitors to send a touch-activated wish to the canopy of lanterns above, activating a magical display of lights and colors.
-Friday 1.4 - Say Goodbye to Saks Downtown - Shop Saks while you can! The women’s store is closing January 5th, while the men’s store will stay open.
-Saturday 1.5 - Brunch Becomes Her - Blake Deadly presents the Financial District's only drag show! Join her the first Saturday of every month from 2-4 PM at Cowgirl Seahorse for a new show with special guests, audience competitions, and $6 mimosas!
-Monday 1.7 - Broomball Demo Day - Ever wanted to play hockey without skates on? Come try Broomball on The Rooftop at Pier 17 Winterland! Broomball is a cross between hockey and soccer, and is played in sneakers on real ice - no skates required! Seaport Fit, in partnership with ZogSports, will be hosting a Broomball Demo Day on Monday January 7th from 7pm - 9pm. Register now to have your chance to sweat-it-out on the ice!
-Wednesday 1.9 - miniMATES Season Kicks Off - The South Street Seaport Museum's miniMATES Winter Season starts today and runs through March 28. There are three time slots available for the 10-week winter session: Wednesdays from 10-11am, Thursday from 10-11am, and Thursday from 3:30-4:30pm. The cost is $250 with discounts available for Family level museum members and additional children. To register e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.

-The Rink at Brookfield – Opening day this year for the 7,000 square-foot outdoor rink is tonight! Enjoy programming led by former U.S. Olympic skaters and featuring something for all skill levels, including public skating, private lessons, intro to hockey for kids, and more. Now through March.
-Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.
-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
