WEEK AHEAD: Everything Going On Below Canal Street (9.20.18)

Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you on the Life Below Canal calendar. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...

-Thursday 9/20 - Epic Voices Series – Emily Wilson: On the Odyssey (FREE) - The first woman to translate Homer’s Odyssey into English, scholar Emily Wilson “has given Homer’s epic a radically contemporary voice” (The New York Times). In this talk, she discusses the challenges of making this ancient work feel alive, including formal decisions and bringing out Homer’s many voices.

-Thursday 9/20 - Seaport Fit (FREE/RSVP NEEDED)- Seaport Square at Pier 17 hosts FREE fitness classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays till October 23rd curated and led by some of New York’s top fitness experts. Classes include boot camp, circuit training, yoga, and more. Classes are free but space is limited so be sure to RSVP to secure your spot.

-Friday 9/21 - South Street Seaport Museum Free Fridays (FREE) - Today is the last day for Free Fridays today, with free admission to the Museum from 3-7PM.

-Friday 9/21 - Fall Movie Night: Men in Black (1997) & A Hare Grows in Manhattan (short) (FREE) - Agents Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) and Jay (Will Smith) are members of a top-secret organization established to monitor alien activity on Earth. Together they take on a mission to track down an intergalactic terrorist (Vincent D’ Onofrio) bent on destroying Earth. It’s all in a day’s work for the Men in Black.

-Saturday 9/22 - Go Fish! featuring The Suzi Shelton Band (FREE) - Experience the thrill of catch-and-release fishing and discover the variety of marine life thriving in the Hudson River! Skilled anglers will be on hand to assist. Rods and bait provided or bring your own. All ages are welcome. FREE music too!

-Saturday 9/22 - The Vendy Awards (TICKETS NEEDED) - The 14th Annual Vendy Awards, a fundraiser for the Street Vendor Project, features 25 of NYC's best street and market vendors, nominated by the public, going head to head and compete across 5 different categories. Tickets include unlimited food and drink.

-Saturday 9/22 - Community Volunteer Day (FREE) - In honor of the 25th National Public Lands Day, you’re invited to Governors Island for a day of digging in the dirt! Help them get prepared for fall by tackling their most urgent landscape needs: clearing pathways, ridding plantings of invasive species, blending soil, mulching trees, cutting back overgrowth, and much more! Join for a rewarding day of gardening and giving back. This event is kid-friendly, so bring the whole family!

-Saturday 9/22 - Saturday Morning Show (FREE) - It’s back! Join every week for everyone's favorite kids show at Hudson Eats featuring storytelling, music, magicians and more! 10am Music with Carl Banks, 11am Performance by Sammie and Tudie.

-Sunday 9/23 - Yoga In The Battery (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - Tejal Yoga is offering Yoga in The Battery twice a week (Sundays & Wednesdays) until September 30th! Sundays are open for all ages. Bring your own mat or borrow one of ours while supplies last, first come first served.

-Sunday 9/23 - Fulton Stall Market Outdoor Farmer's Market (FREE) - This year the Sunday market will include guest chefs from Seaport District and Lower Manhattan restaurants offering tastes of their menus and featuring local and seasonal ingredients sourced from the market’s farmers.

-Wednesday 9/26 - Tribeca Arts+Culture Night (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - This fall edition will be by far the BIGGEST edition of TAC Night ever with over 55 venues, 250 artists, 15 events and many incredible surprises....They’ll have Fashion, Design, Music, Dance, VR, Art installations, Visuals arts, crafts and pretty much everything art !

Don’t forget about these ongoing exhibits to check out:

-Jacob Hashimoto on Governors Island - Opening to the public daily though October 31. With The Eclipse, Jacob Hashimoto transforms the historic Chapel of St. Cornelius with over 15,000 delicate bamboo and paper kites. Exhibited for the first time in the United States, The Eclipse provides a contemplative reprieve from the frenetic energy of the city, contrasting with Hashimoto’s colorful and dynamic work Never Comes Tomorrow, installed nearby in the Liggett Hall archway. 

-Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.

-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
