LOCAL PROFILES: Ryan Maguire's (1.10.18)

Who doesn't want to go where everyone knows your name? We've got plenty of local bars downtown where the owners and staff create a family-like atmosphere. We love meeting new teams and finding new go-to spots for meeting up with friends, watching sports games, and just taking a break from the weather. One of our favorites is the historic FiDi Ryan Maguire's Ale House. We spoke with Annie, bartender and manager, to learn more about Ryan Maguire's history and what makes them unique.

Tell us about Ryan Maguire's...
We first opened on March 17th 1995 (St. Patrick's Day for good luck!) as Ryan Maguire's Ale House. It was the second bar/restaurant opened by Tommy and Mena Maguire. Their first place was Ryan's Sports Bar on Gold Street, which they opened in 1993 (and closed in 2007 due to demolition). Before that, Tommy and Mena spent many years working in the downtown area since they immigrated to the US from Ireland in the 70s. In 2010, there was a fire that destroyed the Ale House. Luckily, we were able to rebuild and reopen in 2011 as Ryan Maguire's Bar & Restaurant at the same spot and we've been serving customers ever since.

How has the neighborhood impact the evolution of the restaurant?
The neighborhood has changed so much in the last 27 years and we're lucky to have been here to see it all. The major change of course is how residential the downtown area has become. When we first opened, our business was titled heavily towards business lunches and after-work drinks. But we have seen it expand to become a place for young couples, families, tourists and everyone in between. We're happy to see downtown grow to become more of a destination for New Yorkers and tourists alike.

What's new about the restaurant locals should know?
We just revamped our whole regular menu as well as adding a great weekend brunch menu, which we serve on weekends from 11 to 4. We also host a weekly trivia night every Wednesday at 8:30pm. It's a great time for locals to come in, have some fun with their friends, meet new people, and best of all win prizes! We give away free drinks and as well as various gifts each week. 2017 also marked our second year as the downtown home of the Florida Gators. We have game day specials for all games home and away including $4 Miller Lites and $25 pitcher and wings combos. Go Gators!

What is your favorite thing about running a business in FiDi?
The best thing has always been getting to know our customers. A lot of our customers have been coming in for over 20 years and we consider them friends . At the same time, it's always a pleasure to meet new people - whether they're recent arrivals to the neighborhood or visitors just passing through. Sometimes people visiting the city stop by and then come back a year later on their next visit - it's always nice to be remembered in that way.

What's coming up for the restaurant in 2018?
Please follow us on Instagram @ryanmaguires or Facebook for updates! We are always doing promotions throughout the year and post updates online. Keep watch around St. Patrick's Day especially because we do specials every weeknight before the holiday as an annual anniversary tradition.

What are your favorite local spots (besides Ryan Maguires, of course!)
We love the Seaport especially in the summer. It's got a great vibe and always has something to see or do. There are a bunch of really excellent bars and restaurants around there -- even a movie theater! Some places we recommend are the Paris Cafe, Jeremy's and Fish Market, just to name a few. We're also looking forward to seeing Pier 17 re-open and some of the new things that will bring to the area.
