EVENTS: Tom Chapin & The Chapin Sisters (4.16.18)
We love when to check out the music scene below Canal Street, and have found some of our recent favorite artists thanks to the slew of performance venues in the neighborhood. When we heard about an upcoming performance presented by the Schimmel Center (3 Spruce Street) featuring Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and guitarist Tom Chapin and his daughters Lily and Abigail—The Chapin Sisters, we had to learn more.
Set for this Friday, April 20, 2018 at 7:30 p.m., the concert will feature original and traditional songs by the acclaimed family roots group including “Cat’s In The Cradle,” “Remember When The Music,” and “Circle” by Harry Chapin, as well as “Pass The Music On,” and “This Pretty Planet” by Tom Chapin. Fun fact: The concert coincides with the debut of the album, At the Turning Point, which celebrates the thirty years of collaborations between Tom Chapin & Friends. The Chapin Sisters additionally will perform songs from their forthcoming recording, Ferry Boat.
We spoke with Tom himself to get his thoughts on the upcoming show, and his favorite NYC spots...
The concert coincides with the debut of the album, At the Turning Point, which celebrates the thirty years of collaborations between Tom Chapin & Friends. Congratulations! How does it feel to be returning to these songs?
These are songs of mine that still resonate with me, tunes I love to sing and share. Not only was it 30 years ago, 1988, that Tom Chapin & Friends first performed together, it was 60 years ago, in the summer of 1958, that I first picked up a guitar and sang. We decided to commemorate these milestones with a live-in-concert album, a collection of some of my favorite tunes from a long career. My “Friends” Michael Mark and Jon Cobert have traveled, sung, played and collaborated with me for lo these many years, I am so lucky and grateful for their joyful expertise. And my lovely singing daughters, Abigail and Lily ~ The Chapin Sisters ~ lent their beautiful voices and spirit. Many is the time I have been asked at a concert, “Which CD is most like tonight’s show?” and now we have an answer, “At The Turning Point.”
The Chapin Sisters will perform songs from their forthcoming recording, Ferry Boat. Tell us about the album!
Ferry Boat is a lovely EP of new songs by The Chapin Sisters. This EP showcases their great songwriting and unique vocal blend. It features two new songs each by Lily & Abigail alongside their take on a number written with them in mind by Hilary Hawke.
What are you most excited about performing?
I am most looking forward to performing with my daughters. I don’t get to do it enough, and it is one of the joys of my life. And we not only get to sing our own tunes, but will revisit some classic songs by my late brother Harry Chapin, like Cats In The Cradle, Circle and Remember When The Music.
What can concert goers expect?
These concerts are a joyful evening of story and song. You will hear a range of great songs, well played and sung. And if there is a particular song you would like me to sing, you can go to my website, www.tomchapin.com, and request it. I try to honor all those that I receive.
What's your favorite go-to spots in New York City?
That is a difficult question. I am a native New Yorker, having grown up in Greenwich Village and then Brooklyn Heights, who now lives in the lower Hudson Valley. New York is my favorite city in the world, there is so much to see and do that nurtures my soul - the great Museums, the High Line, even walking around the amazing neighborhoods that are constantly changing.
