WEEK AHEAD: Everything Going On Below Canal Street (1.4.18)

Welcome to the 1st 2018 edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you on the Life Below Canal calendar. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...

-Friday 1/5 - Luminaries - Brookfield Place (FREE) - Today is the last day for this holiday tradition. Visitors will be immersed in a canopy of light emanating from hundreds of suspended lanterns. Three Wishing Stations on the ground will allow visitors to “send” a wish to the canopy of lanterns above, translating the wish into a mesmerizing display of lights and colors. For every wish sent by the public during the holiday season, Brookfield will donate $1, up to $25,000, to the GRAMMY Museum’s music education programs.

-Saturday 1/6 - Volez, Vogyez, Voyagez - Louis Vuitton (FREE but reservations recommend) - Last chance before this closes the 7th! . The showcase, which details the French brand’s roots via trunks, steamer bags and other historic paraphernalia, lands at the former American Stock Exchange building for a nine-week run.

-Sunday 1/7 - Breaking Bread - Museum of Jewish Heritage (Tickets Needed) - Enjoy a hands-on challah braiding workshop and performance of an original play inspired by the PJ Library book, Karen Ostrove’s Rise & Shine: A Challah Day Tale. Recommended for ages 4 to 8.

-Tuesday 1/9 - Bird Walks - The Battery (FREE but RSVP needed) - Did you know you can join The Battery Conservancy for free bird walks, led by an NYC Audubon guide? Explore the diverse population of winter birds in The Battery.

Don’t forget about these ongoing exhibits:

-Sea Of Light - Sea of Light is an immersive sensory adventure activated by movement and sound at the Seaport. Open through March 2018. Check out our post on it here.

-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
