EVENT: Shakespeare Downtown - June 14th - June 24th (6.11.18)
There's no shortage of incredible cultural events going on below Canal Street all Summer long. One of our favorites? Shakespeare Downtown, producing new Shakespeare theatre at Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park.
We spoke with Artistic Director Billie Andersson, who plays Titania in this year's production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, running from June 14-24, to learn what you can expect and how you can score tickets...
Tell is about Shakespeare Downtown....
Shakespeare Downtown is new Shakespeare theatre at Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. Shakespeare Downtown was founded by Artistic Director, Billie Andersson, and Director Geoffrey Horne. Shakespeare Downtown evolved out of ten years of successful productions, mostly staged at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. Horne (a long-time member of the Actors Studio) has been an acting teacher and director at the Lee Strasberg Institute for 35 years. He also worked as an actor in movies such as The Bridge on the River Kwai and Bonjour Tristesse, and in both theatre and television. Andersson, a graduate of Barnard College, studied acting at Strasberg, and with William Esper. In 2016, Shakespeare Downtown produced Romeo and Juliet and, in 2017, Richard III. This June, Shakespeare Downtown will produce A Midsummer Night’s Dream from June 14-24.
What is so unique about Shakespeare Downtown?
By staging these free outdoor performances at Castle Clinton, audience members experience the plays how they were originally done at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre 400 years ago – in the open-air, in the round, on the water.
Why did you pick A Midsummer Night’s Dream to perform?
We thought it would be a wonderful play to do at the castle – in the open-air, at night, in June.
When are the shows?
Midsummer will run from June 14-24 - Thursdays-Sundays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
How can locals get tickets?
Tickets are free and available the day of the performance at the castle starting at 6pm. There is seating for 200 people a night.
What can locals expect when they attend a performance by Shakespeare Downtown?
The actors wear Elizabethan costumes and perform inside the castle walls where we create a theatre complete with chairs, audio, and lights.
What are your go-to spots downtown?
My favorite restaurant was the Bridge Café – I keep hoping they will re-open! And I love The Battery – it is very beautiful. It is my favorite place to walk downtown.
