Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...
-NOW through May 31st - MVVO ART – AD ART SHOW 2019 At The Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center - AD ART SHOW 2019 brings a curated selection of work from artists working in advertising and design to the oversized digital screens at the Oculus. All art displayed will also be available for purchase.
-NOW through 5.22 – Zaha Hadid Design Pop-Up - Zaha Hadid Design, in conjunction with concept store 10 Corso Como New York, will unveil a bespoke installation to showcase the ZHD collection of design objects. Referencing the fluid lines of ZHD’s homeware pieces, the 3-meter-tall installation reinterprets 10 Corso Como’s logo through ZHD’s distinctive language. Located adjacent to the store’s main entrance, the installation features CNC milled surfaces and is enhanced by sinuous floor and wall graphics that coherently unify the ensemble.
-Thursday 5.16 – Saturday 5.18 – Hype Man: A Break Beat Play - Brought to us by the The Flea Theater, HYPE MAN: A Break Beat Play, addresses challenging issues of race and social injustice through the story of a mixed-race hip hop crew about to break through to the national stage. As they rehearse for their network premier a tragedy takes place in a band members neighborhood. The tough conversations that follow test their friendships, their collective moral compass, all amidst the beats of a pulsating hip-hop soundtrack. Content not appropriate for young children. Recommended for teens and adults.
-Thursday 5.16 – Battery Park Running Club - Start with warm-up exercises before jogging the 2.4 miles down and back along the length of the Battery Park City Esplanade. Parks Programming Leaders guide the warm-up and cool-down and ensure a favorable pace for all participants. Meets inside the Community Center at Stuyvesant High School at 345 Chambers St.
-Friday 5.17 – Brooklyn Bridge Dance Party - Get ready for a crazy night you’ll never forget! The party starts in Manhattan, where we’ll take the subway to Brooklyn. This is not your normal train ride! 2 channels of music bumping non-stop as your tour guide/MC teaches you about NYC. When we arrive in Brooklyn, we take the party to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge as we walk/dance/sing/and party all the way back to our final bar destination!
-Friday 5.17 - Smorgasburg at WTC Oculus - Smorgasburg – the largest outdoor weekly food market in the United States – is officially back! From now until October, try out something new every Friday with 25 different food stalls to choose from.
-Friday 5.17 – 5.18 – Manhattan Concours – For the first time ever in Manhattan, twenty-five collector cars will be showcased along BFPL’s picturesque waterfront plaza. A display of culture, travel, and sport, these cars embody the essence of BFPL. Combining both the best vehicles of today with the best in class from generations past, we are proud to bring a weekend celebration of this luxury to Manhattan.
-Saturday 5.18 – Summer Fitness Series at Brookfield Place - Get fit at Brookfield Place! The fitness series returns this summer with a variety of fun and challenging classes taught by instructors from top NYC fitness studios. The series kicks off and concludes with run clubs in May and the last two weeks of September. Through 9.18 Wednesdays at 6:30PM Saturdays at 10AM.
-Sunday 5.19 – Fulton Stall Market Weekly Outdoor Market – The outdoor marker is open every Sunday 11AM-5PM on Pier 17 until 11.24!
-Sunday 5.19 – Drag Bingo - The host of Cowgirl Seahorse's BRUNCH BECOMES HER brings you DRAG BINGO!
-Wednesday 5.22 – Summer Fitness Series at Brookfield Place - Get fit at Brookfield Place! The fitness series returns this summer with a variety of fun and challenging classes taught by instructors from top NYC fitness studios. The series kicks off and concludes with run clubs in May and the last two weeks of September. Through 9.18 Wednesdays at 6:30PM Saturdays at 10AM.
-Tuesday 5.21 – Dine Around Downtown - Dine Around Downtown has been bringing the neighborhood's leading restaurateurs together for this annual lunchtime festival since 1995 and this year's event will give you the chance to taste dishes big and small from dozens of local restaurants.
Don’t forget about these ongoing exhibits to check out:
-Auschwitz: Not Long Ago. Not Far Away - Auschwitz: Not Long Ago. Not Far Away., the first traveling exhibit focusing on the concentration camp in Poland is at The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial. The exhibit will feature hundreds of artifacts including a Model 2 freight wagon used for the deportation of Jews, concrete posts that were part of the camp’s fence and survivor testimonies. With anti-Semitism on the rise, the JHE believe the exhibit is a chance to view the horrors of the past as a call to action against hate, bigotry and intolerance. On display till September 1st.
-Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.
-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
