Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you on the Life Below Canal calendar. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...
-Thursday 5/10 - When We Were Young (FREE) - Now until the 23rd, artist Carlos Rolón will put a spotlight on the worldwide trend of bicycle riding as a serious and sustainable means of transportation that is re-shaping cities. When We Were Young will explore the exquisite mix of engineering and craftsmanship, ranging from cutting-edge designs to populist expressions, that moves us forward on calibrated wheels. The exhibition will feature four bikes: Boriqua Sound System, The Majestics (For Louise) which was initially created for La Fabrique Sonore, Expérience Pommery #9, and two new bikes commissioned by Arts Brookfield, SUNNY & LEE.
-Friday 5/11 - Spring Market at Westfield World Trade Center (FREE) - From now until May 31st, check out 14 unique kiosks and three bespoke pop-ups. These boutique retailers offer a range of products from beauty products to jewelry, food treats and home décor to cards-- everything is here to brighten up your look and living space, or maybe even give a spring gift to someone special.
-Friday 5/11 & Saturday 5/12 - Open Studios with Workspace Artists-in-Residence (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - Don't forget to RSVP to Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Open Studios with Workspace Artists-in-Residence. This free, two-day, art-filled event celebrates the work of 16 artists who are working across all disciplines and genres.
Discover new artists, art forms, and ideas. Connect with other art lovers. Get a behind-the-scenes view of creative practices in the visual, literary, and performing arts.
-Friday 5/11 - Get Your Tickets For Pier 17 - Tickets go on sale today for the first Pier 17 shows, Amy Schumer and Kings of Leon.
-Saturday 5/12 - Biscuits & Bath FiDi Opening Party (FREE) - They will be having their Grand Opening on Saturday, May 12th, 2018 from 10am to 2pm, where they will be raffling off great prizes, giveaways, and so much more sponsored by Pet Plate & New York Veterinarian Practice with special guests from Frolic!
-Saturday 5/12 & Sunday 5/13 - Kids Food Festival (FREE/RSVP NEEDED) - The Creative Kitchen Kids Food Festival, in collaboration with the James Beard Foundation and Westfield, is set to host a weekend of events on May 12th and 13th, 10am to 4pm. The Kids Food Festival is a celebration to educate families about making balanced food choices to help create wholesome lifelong eating habits
-Sunday 5/13 - Fulton Stall Market Outdoor Farmer's Market (FREE) - This year the Sunday market will include guest chefs from Seaport District and Lower Manhattan restaurants offering tastes of their menus and featuring local and seasonal ingredients sourced from the market’s farmers.

- Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.
-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
