Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you on the Life Below Canal calendar. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...
-Friday 11/2 - Canstruction 2018 (FREE) - An extraordinary annual design competition and the most unique food charity in the world, Canstruction challenges teams of architects, engineers, and contractors to build sculptures made entirely out of unopened cans of food. The large-scale structures are placed on display and later donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. On display till 11/15!
-Saturday 11/3 - Brunch Becomes Her - Blake Deadly presents the Financial District's only drag show! Join her the first Saturday of every month from 2-4 PM at the Cowgirl Seahorse for a new show with special guests, audience competitions, and $6 mimosas!
-Saturday 11/3 - Saturday Morning Show (Brookfield Place) - Join every week for everyone's favorite kids show at Hudson Eats featuring storytelling, music, magicians and more!
-Sunday 11/4 - Fulton Stall Market Outdoor Farmer's Market (FREE) - This year the Sunday market will include guest chefs from Seaport District and Lower Manhattan restaurants offering tastes of their menus and featuring local and seasonal ingredients sourced from the market’s farmers.
-Tuesday 11/6 - Greenmarket at Oculus Plaza at Westfield Westfield World Trade Center - Our favorite Greenmarket has extended their season until November 27th!
-Thursday 11/8 - Hari Kondabolu - Hari Kondabolu is a comedian, writer, and podcaster based in Brooklyn, NY. His Netflix special Warn Your Relatives debuted in May 2018 & was described by The NY Times as “an incisively funny and formally adventurous hour that reveals a comic in command of his powers.” Additionally, Kondabolu has performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Comedy Central.
Don’t forget about these ongoing exhibits to check out:
-Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.
-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
