CULTURE: Popovich Comedy Pet Theater (12.5.18)

This January, theater is going to the dogs! The Popovich Comedy Pet Theater is coming to BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center on January 5th and January 6th, offering a fun time for the whole family to enjoy watching intelligent dogs and cats (all rescued) show off their acting skills alongside some talented hoomans! You may have seen their performance on David Letterman, Jay Leno, “America’s Got Talent,” or Las Vegas, but we spoke with Gregory Popovic, Owner/Producer/Artist, to learn what you can expect to see when the show comes to NYC…

Tell us about the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater…

Our show is combination of talented rescued pets and humans alike performing classic European-style physical comedy, with a hint of classic vaudeville acts.

What makes the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater so unique?

Besides all of our pet actors being rescues, we found a new way to present our pets on stage; instead of a show with our pets doing some simple tricks, we have transformed it into a story, where our pets have become fabulous actors with individual acts and sketches personalized for each one, with examples like our dog school and “Animal Real World”. The act that makes us so unique is the main attraction, our “House Cat Review” with 14 lovely cats performing on stage!

Tell us about the upcoming performance at BMCC…

We are performing at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center for 2 days, with 3 shows each day. We have an 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM, and 5:00 PM show both days! These shows are filled with action-packed drama, and each have a happy ending!

What can people expect at these performances?

You can expect to be blown away with the amazing variety of performances in our show, with our human performers juggling, performing acrobatics, and balancing acts side by side with more than 30 pets on stage performing astonishing tricks. The types of pets we will have are dogs, cats, parrots, geese, doves, and our extraordinary guest star, Mr. Diamond our mini horse!

What is your favorite part of the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater?

One the performance end of things, I would have to say the “House Cat Review”, where my 14 cats show off their talents and turn into stupendous stars! But I would have to say spreading the important message of ensuring everyone knows that “animals are people too!” and they deserve to be cared for as such, along with pushing the importance of adopting animals in need of homes and love, like I have with all of my pets!
