LOCAL PROFILES - Kim Carton & Jackie Brookstein of VALLEY (12.14.17)
What better time to support local during than during the holiday season? There are so many great shops below Canal Street, one of the reasons we launched Life Below Canal was to give those local businesses (and neighbors/business owners) a place to share their ties to the neighborhood and how it has impacted their business.
One of the first shops we fell in love in below Canal Street was VALLEY when it opened in 2013, and have been avid supports (aka shoppers) ever since. So, we knew we had to talk to Kim Carton and Jackie Brookstein, owners of this awesome Tribeca boutique, to share the history behind VALLEY, how the neighborhood has shaped its evolution, and what they have in store (literally and figuratively) for 2018. Check it out...
Tell us about VALLEY...
VALLEY was launched in September 2013 by us. The name was chosen as a homage to our hometown, Huntingdon Valley, Pa. As residents of Downtown NYC, Valley represents our love of fashion and shopping. We feel we've continued to be a shopping destination in Tribeca because of our well-curated array of designers and the relationships we've built with our clients. Our goal is to create an effortless shopping experience. Each piece has been handpicked to be worn often and with love!
What inspired you to open in Tribeca?
We both live downtown and love to shop. Our options below Canal St, were very limited and did not include a mix of casual and dressy options. We decided to open a store where we would want to shop with the brands we love.
How has the neighborhood impacted the evolution of the shop?
With the opening of Brookfield Place and new shops in the neighborhood- as well as new developments, TriBeca has become more of a shopping destination than it was in 2013. Our focus is on keeping it fresh by bringing in brands our customers are excited about, can't find everywhere; as well as providing an in-store experience they can't get elsewhere.
What's coming up in 2018 for VALLEY?
We are always excited for a new year and new lines. We're bringing in really great, wearable brands such as Onia, Xirena Swim, ICONS, Kule, Paradised and Rag & Bone Collection. We also have a lot of fun trunk shows and events coming up this year- we try and support local designers as much as we can.
What's unique about VALLEY that locals may not know?
We are the most kid, husband and dog -friendly store around! We always have toys (for kids and dogs!), great comfy chairs and a full bar.
