WEEK AHEAD: Everything Going On Below Canal Street (5.2.19)
Welcome to this week's edition of Week Ahead, your rundown on everything going on below Canal Street this weekend and coming week. We’ve vetted and collected the best events (many are FREE!) for you. Here are a few of our favorite events/activities coming up...
-Thursday 5.2 – 5.4 – Fado Festival - Brookfield Place is excited to host part of the Fado Festival NY & NJ. Fado is an iconic Portuguese musical tradition, and the Festival combines its ancient roots with contemporary interpretations. Known for its mournful and soulful songs loosely captured by the Portuguese word saudade, or "longing" that evoke a bygone era, Fado is a thriving symbol of Portugal and reminds us of its past and present.
-Thursday 5.2 – Battery Park Running Club - Start with warm-up exercises before jogging the 2.4 miles down and back along the length of the Battery Park City Esplanade. Parks Programming Leaders guide the warm-up and cool-down and ensure a favorable pace for all participants. Meets inside the Community Center at Stuyvesant High School at 345 Chambers St.
-Friday 5.3 - Smorgasburg at WTC Oculus - Smorgasburg – the largest outdoor weekly food market in the United States – is officially back! From now until October, try out something new every Friday with 25 different food stalls to choose from.
-Friday 5.3 - Make Pizza Drink Wine - Get schooled by world-renowned pizza chefs Roberto and Giorgia Caporuscio at Kesté’s Fulton Street location, where you’ll spend hours with us learning how to make (and taste, obviously!) authentic Neapolitan pizza.
-Sunday 5.5 - Voyage Voyage - Throwback to 'La Boum' & travel from 1980s to present day while singing along to iconic tunes spun by a DJ in French brasserie Beaubourg. First Sunday of every month, 6pm - 10pm.
-Wednesday 5.8 – Summer Fitness Series at Brookfield Place - Get fit at Brookfield Place! The fitness series returns this summer with a variety of fun and challenging classes taught by instructors from top NYC fitness studios. The series kicks off and concludes with run clubs in May and the last two weeks of September. **** May 1 - September 18, 2019 Wednesdays at 6:30pm Saturdays at 10am.
Don’t forget about these ongoing exhibits to check out:
-Black Gotham Experience - Check out the visual storytelling project highlighting the profound connection between the African Diaspora and New York City, as photographic artist Kamau Ware shares his celebration of New York’s Black heritage with Seaport District NYC (192 Front Street). Experience a series of walking tours, graphic novels, film screenings, and workshops in an exhibition of New York’s Black heritage.
-Sunset, Sunrise (Revolution) (FREE) - This temporary public art installation at Pier A Plaza is an interactive, large-scale sculpture designed specifically for the site. It consists of 27 aluminum panels embedded with 9,000 crystal prisms activated by natural light, and is based on a previous, three-panel installation in Austin, Texas, titled Hyperprism. The artwork will be on view through the summer of 2018 in front Pier A Harbor House, located at 22 Battery Place and the Hudson River.
