CULTURE: Halloween Below Canal (10.23.17)

Call us basic, but pumpkins, candy and crisp fall weather are high on our list of things that make us happy here at Life Below Canal. Each year there are some events below Canal (ok and one not TECHNICALLY under Canal but still awesome…!) that are not to be missed. We’ve rounded up some of the spookiest and best things you can do below canal this Halloween weekend.

Friday 10/28

Asphalt Screams 2017

Location: Asphalt Green

Cost: FREE

Wear your best costume and join us for an afternoon of tricks, treats, and active Halloween games. Free and open to the public, Asphalt Screams will feature trick or treating and sports-related activities, including a Spooktacular Soccer Shootout. The first 500 kids at each campus will receive a goody bag!

 

Saturday 10/28

Brookfield Halloween Bash

Time: 12-3pm

Location: Brookfield Place

Cost: FREE

Brookfield has a full lineup of fun this year, so make sure to wear your costumes and head over! Their “spook-tacular” family-friendly activities include:

-Quiet Clubbing: Grab some headphones and let the DJs transport you to a high energy costumed dance party on the Waterfront Plaza!

-Mysterious Cauldrons by Emilie Baltz: Visual and sound installation that features a series of interactive, large format ice blocks that play music when touched.

-Costume Catwalk: Walk “red carpet style” on our Costume Catwalk with your favorite emcees, Tracy and Mason!

-LEGO Photo Op: Snap a photo with a larger-than-life original LEGO sculpture, designed and built by world-renowned artist Sean Kenney, at Brookfield Place.

-Trick-or-Treat at designated locations throughout Brookfield Place!

-Photo Booth, Storytelling and Demos, Temporary Tattoos & More!

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Time: Entries received: 4:45-5:30pm Judging begins: 5:30pm

Location: Washington Market Park

Cost: FREE

The Third annual Washington Market pumpking carving contest is ON! This fun community event features trophies awarded in five categories: scariest, funniest, cutest, most realistic and most creative! Bring your own pumpkin to enter, or just stop by with your family to enjoy the festive display. Remember the rules:

-Bring your carved pumpkin to Washington Market Park between 4:45pm and 5:30pm.

-No carving will be permitted at the event.

-Battery-operated candles will be provided for illumination.

-Judging will begin at 5:30pm, and the winners will be announced by 6pm.

Pumpkin entries may be taken home after the contest OR may be kept in the park overnight for display during the park’s annual Halloween party the following day, Sunday, October 29th, from 1-3pm. Should you choose to display your pumpkin, please claim it immediately after the party.

 

Sunday 10/29

Washington Market Annual Halloween Parade and Party

Time: 1 - 3pm

Location: Washington Market Park

Cost: FREE

A beloved tradition below Canal, the Washington Market Halloween parade and party draw a huge crowd of neighborhood families. Inside the park you can find a dozen free events from penny-in-a-haystack to a bone dig in the sandbox, and a hay circle on the lawn.

PLEASE NOTE: Strollers are not be permitted in the park during the event. For your convenience, a free stroller-check will be available at Duane and Greenwich streets, run by our Friends board volunteers.

PARADE: Parade line-up begins at 12:50pm near CitiGroup Plaza (Beach Street at N. Moore Street). The parade travels south along Greenwich Street to the park.

Seaport Halloween Block Party

Date: Sunday, October 29th

Time: 11am - 2pm

Location: Seaport District (19 Fulton Street between Water and South Streets)

Ages: All ages welcome

Cost: FREE but RSVP HERE

From stilt walkers to face painters and a concert featuring Ramblin’ Dan (who performed at both of our sons birthdays and is a favorite of kids and parents alike!) A free mini pumpkin decorating station (while supplies last) for kids is sure to be a hit as well as costumed characters and other fun surprises. The event is rain or shine.

Hudson River Park Kidz Karnival

Date: Sunday, October 29th

Time: 12pm - 5pm

Location: Pier 26

Ages: All ages welcome

Cost: FREE

Check out the transformed Pier 26 into “Halloween Central” with fun-filled attractions for the family. Interactive storytelling with Story Pirates, magic with Kid Ace, pumpkin painting with the Friends of Hudson River Park Playground Committee, rides, face painting, treats and much more.

 

For a fun adventure off the island….

Governor’s Island Night of 1000 Jack O’Lanterns

Date: Sunday, October 26th THROUGH the 29th

Time: 11am - 2pm

Location: Governor’s Island (Ferry from Battery Maritime Building)

Ages: All ages welcome

Cost: Adults $24, Senior 65+ or Child 3-12 $20 Children under 2 are free

See more than 1,000 illuminated jack o’lanterns carved by artists from around the tri-state area along a “festive, tree lined pathway.”
