OPENINGS: Joe's Pizza (4.3.19)
Joe’s Pizza has been a staple slice of ours for YEARS. So, you can imagine how excited we were to hear it was opening in FiDi (at the corner of Fulton and Nassau)! We spoke with Ian, one of the Joe’s Pizza partners, to learn about the new shop & what you can expect (asides an epic slice)…
Tell us about Joe’s Pizza…
Joe's Pizza was established in 1975 by Joe Pozzuoli, originally from Naples. We gained an incredible following on the corner of Bleecker and Carmine Street in the West Village, only about 300 square feet. In 2005, after being on the corner for 30 years, a new landlord came in and raised our rent 2100%. We moved two doors down to 7 Carmine Street and have been slinging slices there ever since.
Over time, our following has really grown, and when the grandsons were ready to run their own stores, we expanded after essentially being in one location for 38 years. Many times with expansion, quality can suffer. However, we won best slice in NYC according to NY Magazine in 2004 (1 store) and 2017 (3 stores).
What makes Joe’s pizza unique?
We are the quintessential NY slice. Thin, crispy, large, foldable, and best to grab on the go. Fresh sauce, Not too sweet. Not too tangy. Balanced. Best in class quality at a very affordable price point. Premium street food. No fuss.
What inpisred you to open up shop downtown?
Possibly more than any area in NYC, for the past decade or so, we've been receiving delivery requests to deliver to offices downtown that we simply couldn't service. One day about 2 years ago, Joe and I took a drive to visit the memorial and witness first hand the power of transformation. Admittedly, it had been quite a while since I had visited. We were floored. There was something undeniably exciting going on, and it left a lasting impact. From that day on, I spent more and more time downtown. Less with the expectation to open Joe's, but simply to feel apart of it.
What’s unique about this location?
What's most unique about this location is the scaffolding that's covering our storefront and the entire block. Looking forward to putting up our sign and awning one day soon. Aside from that, this is Joe's, same as it's always been. Same recipe for 50 years. Family member running the store. All locations should have a unique feel from the energy of the location, but the pizza should be consistent.
What can locals expect when they visit?
Locals should expect a great slice at a great price in a cozy, fast paced setting. No waiter service or big menu. A few pies done really well. At all hours of the day. 365 days a year.
What are your hours?
Hours: 10am - 3am.
